Membership in one of the bands is a full year elective activity and is to be considered a privilege.  Students must be academically eligible and exhibit good behavior in all classes to participate in contests, concerts, as well as other events.  All directors are committed to providing a positive learning environment for your child.  We hold each student to high expectations of performance, behavior, positive attitude, and work ethic.  If your child puts forth their best effort, he or she will be successful.  The de Zavala Band is a growing program, and together we will add to and build upon its past achievements.

The Beginner Band is designed to help 6th grade students become performers on their chosen instrument and continue their music education into the next grade level.  This group is divided into instrument specific classes in order to give more individualized instruction.  The group will be combined for the Winter and Spring Concert, as well as a contest in the spring.

Concert Band is the intermediate level band consisting of 7th and 8th grade students.  Students in this band must have had prior performing experience.  This ensemble will focus on improving the fundamentals they possess as well as adding the next level for their instrument.  Members will participate in the Winter and Spring Concerts.

Symphonic Band is the varsity level band at de Zavala.  Membership is open to 7th and 8th grade band students based on an audition, grades, scheduling, behavior and director approval.  The requirements for this band include the Winter and Spring concerts, Pre-UIL, UIL, and a festival in the spring.  Members of this band must attend all band functions including all scheduled rehearsals, sectionals and clinics to prepare for contests.  Members are required to participate at the IISD Solo and Ensemble contest, practice regularly, and take private lessons if possible.
