    Stephen F Austin Middle School recognizes that a child's education is a duty that is shared by the school and family. For our children to succeed, it is vital for all students, parents, families, community members, and staff to work together in a partnership. Therefore, this written parent and family engagement policy explains how Austin Middle School will support the important role families play in the education of their children.

    Austin Middle School is a Title I school because a certain percentage of our students are considered low income. We receive “Title I Funds” (Federal money) to supplement the school’s existing programs to help maximize our students’ success.

    An Annual meeting will be held to inform parents of the school’s participation in Title I. To explain the Title I requirements, and the right of parents to be involved. Stephen F Austin will invite all parents and will encourage them to attend.

    The Annual Title I Meeting for the 2020-2021 school year will be held on the following:

     Thursday, 9/24/2020 from 9:00-10:00 AM 

    Thursday, 9/24/2020 from 5:00-6:00 PM

    Parents will be given the opportunity to comment on the school-wide plan and Parent and Family Engagement Policy when they are made public to the community.

    An annual review, evaluation, and revision of the Parent and Family Engagement and school-wider plan will occur in the spring semester and will include parents through surveys as well as the  CIC.

    All information about Stephen F. Austin Title I programs will be provided to parents in a uniform format, in English and Spanish, to meet the  needs of our school community. Upon request, parents with disabilities will be provided information in alternative formats whenever reasonably possible. Information will be provided in the following ways:

    1. Phone calls, School Newsletters, and School Messenger
    2. School Meetings via the Stephen F. Austin Middle school website
    3. Peach Jar via Social Media including the School Website and Twitter

    Information provided to parents about the Title I programs will include a description and explanation of the school’s curriculum, assessments, and achievement levels while children are expected to reach. The school will give parents this information in the following ways:

    1. Home-School Compacts
    2. School-wide parent teacher conferences, and individual conferences as needed
    3. Parent contact via phone calls and emails
    4. Title I Meetings and Family Nights throughout the year
    5. Campus Newsletters twice a month via Houses
    6. Social Media— Twitter, School Website, Peach Jar
    7. Parent Information Nights
    8. Meet the Teacher Night
    9. Progress Reports and Report Cards
    10. Each parent will be provided with a report regarding their child’s performance on STAAR in grades 6th through 8th by August 2021. 

    Opportunities for individual parent meetings to give suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions about the education of their children will be provided at the parent’s request. The school will respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible. Parents who make requests will be given the opportunity to meet:

    1. Through a request to meet with the Title I Parent Liaison, Oralia Trevino at (972) 600-3141.
    2. Through meetings with the student’s teacher which may include the Title I Parent Liaison, the Assistant Principal, The House Teachers, and other staff as appropriate.

    Austin Middle School will assist parents by helping to understand the state and district standards, that assessments and how to monitor their child’s progress in the following ways:

    1. Various community resources
    2. Various family nights
    3. Teacher communication with parents
    4. Parenting Classes

    Monitoring of their child’s progress is available in the following ways:

    1. Online Gradebook
    2. Progress reports
    3. Report cards
    4. Parent Teacher contacts (phone, email, meetings).
    5. Canvas assignment submission

    The campus Parent Involvement Committee will ensue that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent in a format that parents can easily understand in English and Spanish.

    Copies of flyers, phone messages, and other notices will be kept as documentation by the Title I Parent Involvement Liaison.

    Reasonable support for parental involvement activities will be provided.

    Funds are set aside for parental involvement and will be spent upon the agreed activities. Materials for the parent center will be provided as needed.

    Community organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate in parental involvement activities.

    The Parent Involvement Committee will form partnerships with various city and community stakeholders.

    The Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Plan was developed by the CIC and the Austin Middle School Staff in the Spring of 2020 and will be in effect for the 2020-2021 school year.

    The school will distribute this Parent and Family Engagement Policy/Plan to all parents and make it available to the community on or before February 1, 2021.
